Invest in your soil!

Dirtilizer for amazing Dahlia'sImproving soil quality is critical to successful gardening. It's that simple. Plants depend on great soil, and without it, they won't thrive. That's why we created Dirtilizer. The first dual-action biobased fertilizer and soil conditioner that feeds plants and conditions your soil using a unique blend of biobased ingredients. Dirtilizer's 3-0-3 NPK analysis reduces the dangers of overfertilization (when applied according to label directions), including fertilizer burn, salt accumulation in soils, and excess runoff into watersheds that traditional high-concentration synthetic fertilizers can cause. When combined with regular additions of organic matter like compost, and mulches, Dirtilizer is the perfect supplement and complement to an overall soil quality program.

Improve Soil, Feed Plants, Grow More!

Perfect lawns with Dirtilizer

Dirtilizer contains liquid kelp extract, nitrogen (N), potassium (K), micronutrients (iron), and humic acid, which work together to act as a soil improver and to enhance plant growth and vigor. We specifically left out phosphorous (P) because most home lawn and garden soils often don't need phosphorous (unless a soil test says otherwise), and overapplication can harm beneficial soil organisms and lead to excess runoff into watersheds.

Easy to use and apply: Dirtilizer is easy to apply using a watering can, hose-end sprayer or, garden pump sprayer. Dilute 2 ounces of Dirtilizer with 1 gallon of water and apply every 2-4 weeks during the growing season for incredible results.

A little goes a long way: Dirtilizer's concentrated liquid fertilizer and soil enhancing formula makes up to 16 gallons of ready-to-use product that will cover up to 16,000 square feet.

Why don't we put phosphorous (P) in Dirtilizer?
We made a conscious decision not to include phosphorous in Dirtilizer because it's a nutrient that really should be applied on an "as needed" basis. For years phosphorous has been promoted as a critical plant nutrient (it's the "P" in NPK) that plants require, and it is included in many "complete" or "balanced" fertilizer formulations in large amounts. Phosphorous is a critical plant nutrient, but its need is essential for commercial agriculture with high nutrient demands. Phosphorous in commercial agriculture can be depleted due to the heavy demands that industrial farming can put on the soil. We need phosphorous to feed the planet, but home gardens tend not to need that much, so it is vital to use it only when needed. How do you know when you need phosphorous? The best way is by getting a laboratory soil analysis.

There are several reasons why the overapplication of phosphorous is bad for plants, your soil, and the environment, and we will summarize them below. In addition, we have included some key links below with detailed information on phosphorus fertilizers from leading agricultural and horticultural institutions and universities.

1) Over application of phosphorous can harm plants by creating other nutrient deficiencies (much like soil pH can lock out certain nutrients at different pH levels). Plant's demand for phosphorous compared to nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) are much lower so its important to apply only when needed.

2) Soil microorganisms can be harmed by too much phosphorous in the soil, which can negatively impact soil health.

3) Plants only absorb the phosphorous they need, and the rest often gets washed away and end up in watersheds causing groundwater contamination and algal blooms.

4) It's a scarce resource that is needed for global food supplies. Some have labeled it a crisis.

To be clear, phosphorous isn't "bad"; it's an essential plant nutrient, but it can be especially harmful when it's overused or applied when it's not needed, and that is why we have chosen not to include it in Dirtilzer. Happy gardening!
